Pininfarina Brings Stunning Electric Bicycle To EICMA

The Pininfarina electric bicycle, called the Fuoriserie, is simply stunning. While thoroughly modern in every respect, it honors the rich Pininfarina tradition of excellence earned since Battista “Pinin” Farina first founded the company in 1930. During its 84 years, Pininfarina has designed and built of some of the most memorable automobiles ever manufactured by the likes of Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini. Today, it is still managed by the grandson of the founder, who is clearly looking towards a future where electric bicycles are something to take pride in.

In designing its new e-bike, the firm drew inspiration from the Astura Bocca it created for Lancia in 1936, a car that Mussolini liked so much he designated it as the official government vehicle. The handlebars and saddle of the Fuoriserie are leather covered in a pattern inspired by the interlaced upholstery of those early Lancias. Evoking the wooden dashboards found in cars of that era, the top frame tube sports a walnut briar-root wood veneer.

The Pininfarina Fuoriserie is composed of the finest components the bicycle world has to offer. Built by Italian bicycle manufacturer 43 Milano, its frame is made of chrome-plated, hand-welded Dedacciai Zero DR chromoly steel tubing. It features Campagnolo Veloce rim brakes, Nokon Carl Stahl articulated aluminum brake cable housings, a BLB Pista Vera crankset, aluminum rims from H Plus Son, and 700 x 28C Kevlar-reinforced Panaracer Rimbo tires. Germany’s Supernova supplies it with a hub dynamo-powered lighting system which includes a 250-lumen LED headlight.

The rider is assisted by a 250-watt ZeHus Bike+ rear hub motor with a maximum speed of 25 km/h (15.5 mph). Its lithium-ion battery is charged both by the rider’s pedaling on easy stretches and via regenerative braking, so it theoretically shouldn’t need to be plugged in to recharge. The system also allows the rider to recharge his or her smart phone while riding.

Production is limited to just 30 units in honor of 1930, the year Pininfarina was founded. The price? Don’t even bother to ask!

Steve Hanley I have been a car nut since the days when articles by John R. Bond and Henry N. Manney, III graced the pages of Road Track. I know every nut, bolt and bullet connector on an MGB from 20 years of ownership. I now drive a 94 Miata for fun and the occasional HPDE track day. If it moves on wheels, I am interested in it.
