Formula 1 2014: USGP Results – Qualifying

After leading all three practice sessions heading into tomorrow’s United States Grand Prix (USGP), Lewis Hamilton lost the pole position to his Mercedes AMG team mate, Nico Rosberg. It was a superb showing for Rosberg, who is Lewis’ only real remaining rival for this year’s Drivers’ Championship, and showed a significant gap- almost 4 tenths of a second- to Lewis.

It was a strange qualifying session, for sure. Changes to F1’s qualifying format had to be made in order to accommodate the fact that two teams would be missing from the USGP, and last year’s USGP winner, Infiniti Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel, was forced to sit out today’s qualifying results- he’ll be starting from pit lane.

There’s even more weirdness further back. Daniil Kvyat’s Toro Rosso, for example, will drop ten places on the grid, and McLaren driver Jenson Button meanwhile will drop five places after an unscheduled gearbox change, a transgression of Formula One regulations that require gearboxes to last six consecutive events.

So- yeah. Tomorrow’s race is going to be one to remember, for a lot of reasons. You can see how they’ll all line up for the start of the race, tomorrow, below. The race starts at 2:30PM EST, and will be broadcast live on NBC.
