TOTAL LIPID EXTRACTION FROM ALGAE
Total lipid was determined as described by Jones et al. [24] in order to assess the oil available for biodiesel synthesis for both algal species. Briefly, dried algal pellets (approximately 30 mg) were extracted with 20 mL of 2-EE for 30 min at 60 °C with continuous stirring. The solution was then filtered through 0.47 pm PTFE membrane (Millipore) and the residual biomass was extracted with a second 20 mL portion of 2-EE. After filtration, the two filtrates were combined, dried under vacuum, and weighed.
