Australian readers rejoice, and mark your calendars! Electric car maker Tesla is officially going to the land down under on December 9th. This is exciting for Australians who want to dump oil-powered transportation yet have to drive long distances, because the Model S will be the first major EV to be released in the country, and since it has the largest available battery of any pure EVs on the market, it should be able to handle the vast Australia distances (if not on its own, eventually with a network of Supercharger stations).

The big solar power boom in Australia is the perfect backdrop for this launch. Since many homes now have rooftop solar, and the Supercharger stations are powered by renewable energy, Australia could quickly become the country where the most EVs are powered entirely by clean energy.

The Model S will be priced at first at around 117,000 Australia dollars, a number that Tesla says is competitive with models from BMW and Audi sold in the country.
