When Ferrari unveiled its new flagship hybrid hypercar, the 963 horsepower LaFerrari, we all knew it was just a matter of time before a track-focused version was rolled out. That day has arrived. Ferrari has pulled back the sheets of the 1,035 horsepower LaFerrari FXX K at its world premiere in Abu Dhabi.

Engineers at the Prancing Horse focused on increasing the output of the 6.3 liter V12 engine from 789 to 848 horsepower, and the electric motor attached to the KERS hybrid system now cranks out 187 horsepower. The result is a combined output of 1,035 horsepower, though the torque number does fall to “only” 664 lb-ft. Those numbers are still enough to put the LaFerrari FXX K on top of the hypercar trio, beating out both the McLaren P1 GTR and the Porsche 918 Spyder.

More power is just one of the improvements to the new LaFerrari though, as engineers also went all out to improve the aerodynamics and handling. The two-part front splitter comes from Ferrari’s success in the Grand Touring racing program, and the unique split rear spoiler joins a giant rear diffuser in smoothing out airflow. These and other improvements improve downforce by as much as 50%, and considering the already-outstanding track characteristics of the regular LaFerrari, that’s quite the achievement.

It’s pretty amazing how far hybrids have come in such a short time. We’ve gone from the 98 horsepower Toyota Prius to the 1,035 horsepower LaFerrari FXX K in little than a decade, and hybrids are now the undisputed masters of motorsport.
Who’d have thunk it?
