The Nissan LEAF Really Is The World’s Cleanest Car

The Nissan Paint Prank is an awesome marketing campaign that not only boasts about the green econess of the electric LEAF but also introduces an amazingly mind blowing new prototype concept self-cleaning paint. Yes you read that right, self-cleaning paint with the potential to put carwashes out of business forever.

Basically two actors get passerbys to bump into them and they then spill a liquid-based paint on to the shiny white Nissan LEAF that they just happened to be painting next to. Hilarity ensues at the initial shock (and one guy even takes off down the road to avoid potential consequences) and then awe that the paint “magically” slides right off.

Not only does this innovative nano-paint technology repel paint, but also mud and everyday dirt, which could make car washes obsolete. Jumping for joy at the thought of never washing your car again? Well hold off just a sec, as this paint is still after all just a prototype which means not yet available to the public. Only commercial enterprises can get it (boooo).

After watching this video my first question was where can I get that? After finding out I can’t get it, my next question is how in the world does it work?

Well the technology comes to us from UltraTech International Inc and is called Ultra-Ever Dry. Here is the very scientific explanation from their site:

Ultra-Ever Dry is a superhydrophobic (water) and oleophobic (hydrocarbons) coating that will repel most water-based and some oil based liquids. Ultra-Ever Dry uses proprietary omniphobic technology to coast an object and create a surface chemistry and texture with patterns of geometric shapes that have “peaks” or “high points”. These high  points repel water, some olis, wet concrete, and other liquids unlike any other coating.

Not sure about you but I only understood about half of that (dictionary here I come). Ultra-Ever Dry basically creates a protective layer of air using nanotechnology, between the paint on the car and the outside environment. This stops the creation of dirty marks since they can not stick to the coating. It’s kinda like a toilet bowl, but less gross.

Nissan is the first automaker to use the Ultra-Ever Dry technology on a car body, and while there are currently no plans for this amazing technology to be applied as standard, there is talk of an aftermarket option.

One more video because this stuff is so freaking cool. Enjoy!
