Consumer Reports: Tesla Model S Owners are Extremely Satisfied

According to Consumer Reports, owners of the Tesla Model S do not have buyer’s remorse. In fact, 98 percent reported they would definitely buy the car again in the publication’s annual owner-satisfaction survey.

The publication surveyed 350,000 owners of different vehicles, assessing their satisfaction with key vehicle attributes like styling, comfort, features, cargo space, fuel economy, maintenance and repair costs, overall value, and driving dynamics.
Low operating costs topped the list of the Model S’ most satisfying features, which is not surprising considering it receives the equivalent of 89 or 98 mpg depending on whether it’s the 60-kwh or 85-kwh version.

Respondents were also pleased with the vehicle’s comfortable interior, ample cargo space, and enjoyable driving dynamics.
Although luxury brands were reported to be overall more satisfying than mainstream brands, Tesla led the luxury-brand pack, followed by Porsche, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, and Jaguar. The survey also found that hybrid, electric car, and diesel owners were more satisfied with their cars in almost all categories.

This is not the first time the Tesla Model S has been revered in the publication. In its 2013 road test, Consumer Reports gave the Model S a nearly perfect score and said that it may be the best car it has ever tested. The publication was still hesitant to recommend it to subscribers, however, because of its new, relatively unproven status.

In its 2014 Top Picks list, Consumer Reports named the Model S the “Best Overall,” a distinction that indicates it is the “best all-around model” in its category. Despite this high praise, the publication’s enthusiasm for the Model S waned somewhat as the year went on. In its annual reliability survey, the Model S received a less than stellar “average” rating after some owners reported issues with retractable electronic door handles, locks and latches, and other glitches.

Despite these kinks, Consumer Reports’ has not completely abandoned its love affair with the Model S, which it still describes as a sporty, luxurious, energy-efficient, and satisfying option for car owners.

Although most respondents in the survey were generally satisfied with their vehicles (only four models had less than 50 percent of owners who would “definitely” purchase the car again), the Model S’ 98 percent rating undoubtedly makes it a customer satisfaction standout.
