Surface defects are two-dimensional defects, also known as planar defects. There are a variety of surface defects such as grain boundaries, twin boundaries, stacking faults, interphase boundaries (coherent, semicoherent, and incoherent), and antiphase boundaries (specifically in intermetallic compounds). Each of these planar defects has an important role to play affecting various properties of crystalline materials.
