In this type of CRDM, control rods are fastened to cables that are connected to motor-driven drums located above the core. These CRDMs are used in high-temperature gas-cooled reactors supplied by Gulf General Atomic. Their design has two cables (and associated rods) connected to each drive. The rod speed is about 1 in./sec. This gives a reactivity change of approximately 1 cent/sec. The rod position measurement is obtained from a potentiometer connected to the drum.
