Cellulose hydrolysis and fermentation can be achieved by two different process schemes, depending upon where the stage of fermentation is actually carried out in the process sequence: (l) separate hydrolysis and fermentation, SHF, or (2) simultaneous saccharification and fermentation, SSF. The acronyms "SHF" and "SSF" are very commonly used in the field.
