AWS Truepower Webinar Recording: Managing Wind Resource Risk at Complex Sites: An Integrated Approach

How meteorological expertise, state-of-the-art atmospheric models and advanced measurement methods can increase project value and reduce financial risk.

All wind project investments depend greatly on the uncertainty or risk in a project’s wind resource estimates. This is especially true of large wind projects at complex sites with steep terrain, varying thermal stability, mesoscale circulations and other challenging meteorological aspects. Such conditions are often misrepresented or missed in conventional models and measurement techniques.

Reducing uncertainty increases project value, and more accurately estimating the wind characteristics – including speed, direction, shear, turbulence, and inflow angle – across a complex site enables a more optimal plant design and turbine suitability assessment and helps close the unwanted gap between expected and actual energy production when a plant is built.

In this webinar by AWS Truepower, wind resource experts Dr. Michael Brower, Dr. Philippe Beaucage, and Matthew Filippelli will discuss case studies of actual wind projects in complex terrain and wind regimes, showing how an integrated approach combining meteorological expertise, advanced wind flow models, and remote sensing (sodar and lidar) can increase a project’s value and reduce risk.

Ecotricity, Skanska form joint onshore wind power venture

Britain’s first green energy company, Ecotricity, along with global construction and development firm Skanska are forming a joint venture to build wind farm projects in Britain. The joint venture aims to put 350MW of new green energy projects into planning system in the first 5 years.

Spotlight Solar: Lift

Clean Energy Elevated
Lift by Spotlight Solar makes a statement – of stewardship. Designed to complement
a rooftop solar system or other environmental investments, it reminds people of all the beneficial things you do. Installed in a prominent place, Lift will inspire people to make their own positive impact.

Lift’s modular design provides flexibility and enhances your site. Position its arms and solar panels to balance energy production and aesthetics. Even color-coordinate with your building. Add lighting, power outlets, or a touch-screen – so people can learn about solar as they stand in the shade of beautiful clean energy.

US Department of Energy awards $13.4 million to develop advanced biofuels and bio-products

The research and development projects that received the funding from the Department of Energy (DoE) will focus on developing integrated processes for the production of advanced biofuels and chemicals. These products not only will help reduce carbon emissions, but also advance the DoE’s work to enable the production of clean, renewable and cost-competitive drop-in biofuel at $3 per gallon by 2022.

The biofuel research projects, which span five US states, are as follows:

  • The University of Wisconsin of Madison, Wisconsin, will receive up to $3.3 million to develop a process to produce high-value chemicals from biomass, which can be used as plasticizers (an additive in certain plastics) and in the production of industrial chemicals and resins.
  • American Process, Inc. of Atlanta, Georgia, will receive up to $3.1 million to develop and demonstrate processes to upgrade cellulosic sugars to solvents in their demonstration facility.
  • The National Renewable Energy Laboratory of Golden, Colorado, will receive up to $2.5 million to develop a conversion process demonstrating the production of muconic acid from biogas. This acid can be converted into an array of bioproducts, including fuel, plasticizers, and lubricants.
  • Natureworks, LLC of Minnetonka, Minnesota, will receive up to $2.5 million to develop a fermentation process, using biogas and bacteria, for the production of lactic acid. This process could be used for the commercialization of biomethane to fuels.
  • Vertimass LLC of Irvine, California, will receive up to $2 million to commercialize technology to convert ethanol into diesel fuel, gasoline, and jet fuel blend stocks compatible with the current transportation fuel infrastructure.
