UK expands hydrogen transport with car deliveries, first supermarket dispenser

Hyundai fuel cell cars on UK roads

Air Products, Hyundai Motor UK, and Johnson Matthey – all members of the LHNE consortium – will use the cars to demonstrate first-hand how hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) operate easily in the real world.

This will support the project’s work to create the UK’s first hydrogen powered transport system across London and the South East. The cars will complement the hydrogen internal combustion engine (HICE) vans, converted by Revolve Technologies, that are already in service with Commercial Group.

Hyundai was selected to supply the cars based on the great progress it has made in making hydrogen FCEVs commercially available. It was the first global automaker to announce a commercial rollout of zero-emission FCEVs, with plans to manufacture 1000 units of the ix35 Fuel Cell vehicle by 2015.

Hydrogen at Sainsbury’s supermarket

Working with global leaders in hydrogen infrastructure, the new Air Products dispenser at Sainsbury’s will join a network of existing stations in London and the South East of England.

Owned and operated by Air Products, the 700 bar (10 000 psi) SmartFuel® station will be able to refuel a growing number of hydrogen-powered fleets driving around London. These include fuel cell buses running between Covent Garden and Tower Gateway, hybrid HICE delivery vans, and fuel cell taxis already driving on London’s roads.

Hydrogen powered vehicles can refuel in less than three minutes, and offer drivers the same range and speed as conventional vehicles.

London Hydrogen Network Expansion project

The government-backed LHNE project is co-funded by Innovate UK (formerly the Technology Strategy Board). TSB first supported LHNE in 2012 as part of a £7.5 million (US$12 million) initiative to accelerate the commercialisation of projects involving fuel cells and hydrogen energy systems.

The LHNE consortium, led by Air Products, will deliver a publicly accessible, fast-fill 350 and 700 bar (5000 and 10 000 psi) hydrogen fueling station network in London and the South East, over a period of three years. The hydrogen station at Heathrow Airport can already accommodate 350 and 700 bar refueling, and a new hydrogen station with a matching specification will be built in central London.

The creation of this network is particularly important because the hydrogen fuel cell cars due to go on sale from 2014/2015 will require a 700 bar fueling system. The network will include Air Products’ SmartFuel stations, which provide fueling at 350 and 700 bar, and include the company’s technology which complies with the SAE J2601 hydrogen fueling protocol.

The bigger UK hydrogen picture

The UK government recently announced funding to help establish an initial network of up to 15 hydrogen refueling stations by the end of 2015, as well as funding for public sector hydrogen vehicles. The UK H2 Mobility project has mapped out the future of hydrogen fuel cell cars in the UK, forecasting 1.6 million of them on the nation’s roads by 2030.

Earlier this year the Mayor of London’s Office announced the city’s participation in the separate European HyFIVE project, which will see a total of 110 hydrogen FCEVs deployed at several European locations – Bolzano, Copenhagen, Innsbruck, London, Munich and Stuttgart – alongside new clusters of hydrogen refueling stations.

Hydrogen Pilot Plant For Sale

Synthetic Energy, Inc., a pilot facility for the commercial production of hydrogen, was incorporated in Idaho in 2005 pursuant to the award of a USDA Rural Development grant. The project includes: a 1,200 sf metal structure, two 50 kW Entegrity (EW-15) wind turbines; two Proton H 240 hydrolysers; and associated water purification, chiller and compression equipment. It is located on 160 acres of unimproved M-2 land (zoned heavy industrial) approximately 20 minutes from Boise International Airport. Synthetic Energy has produced and sold over 15M scf of high purity hydrogen to a local industrial gas supplier since operations commenced in June 2006. Monthly output was typically two tankers, or about 300,000 scf of hydrogen per month. The wind turbines were utilized, on a net metering basis, to partially offset the electrical power expense. Operations were discontinued in February, 2014 and currently the facility requires equipment updating. The plant, land and equipment is available for sale «as-is» for $350,000.

Pursuant to its Conditional Use Permit, the Synthetic Energy site was entitled for commercial hydrogen production. Although it’s only 20 minutes south of Boise the rural location is well suited for renewable energy research and/or industrial projects. The land is located in Elmore County within a larger tract (approx 1,800 acres) of industrial zoned land between Hwy 84 to the east and the Union Pacific RR one-half mile to the west. The parcel is accessed by a graded easement road and has power (480 3phase) only — no water or sewer. The facility occupies less than two acres of the parcel, the remainder is unimproved land currently used for grazing. Both Entegrity turbines are on 100′ steel latice towers. The area is rated Class 3 in general mixed with Class 2 areas. There are several large commercial wind farms in the surrounding counties.

The plant has not been in full production since February, 2014. The equipment is in varying stages of operational function: one turbine has a broken tip brake and may be best suited for spare parts: the net metering agreement with Idaho Power has been suspended subject to a recertification of the Schweitzer switch; one Proton unit requires replacement of power source fuses, etc. The plant was designed to operate automously and contains video survailiance cameras and Hughes Network uplink dish for internet monitoring of the turbines, hydrolysers and chiller equipment. The building is separated into two rooms; the control room with the turbine control panels, video gear, furnace and main electrical panels, and; the equipment room with the hydrolysers and water tank/purificaion equipment. The Carrier chiller(18 ton) is located on a pad behind the building and the Pdc 3,000 psi diaphram compressor is located on a separate pad 100′ from the building adjacent to a tanker bay. Water use at the plant was less than 75 gallons per day so water was trucked in bi-monthly. There are no water rights with the land although local developers have secured transferable rights at market costs.

Enphase Energy introduces new energy management system

Enphase Energy Inc has launched a new system for energy management that delivers on the vision of enabling large-scale implementation of solar power integrated with the grid.

According to Enphase, the new system intelligently integrates the critical technologies needed to solve solar energy challenges at scale: smart grid intelligence, communications, big data analytics and storage. The energy management system offers the next-generation, smart-grid ready Enphase microinverter, plug-and-play storage, advanced control capabilities and load management.

The new system has three distinct advantages: it provides a better return on investment for system owners, expands the range of profitable business models for installers, and provides broader insight into and control for utilities.

“Enphase is taking a fundamentally different approach to energy management,” said Paul Nahi, Enphase CEO. “The solar industry is dominated by static, isolated systems that do not integrate, communicate, scale or adapt quickly to changes in power generation. Our energy management system is designed to accelerate mass penetration of solar globally and make mainstream access to clean, affordable energy a reality.”

Enphase outlined the benefits of the system for players across the supply chain:
