Workshop to help shape UK project on dynamic power transfer for EVs; charge while you drive

17 November 2014

Via the UK’s Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership comes word that the UK Highways Agency will hold a workshop in Central London on 28 November for stakeholders to help shape a project on dynamic wireless power transfer. Dynamic wireless power transfer could enable electric vehicles to be powered from the road while driving.

The Highways Agency has commissioned a feasibility study to assess how the strategic road network could respond to this challenge. The Agency aims to find out how an inductive power system could operate on the strategic road network. The Agency has commissioned TRL to assist in a feasibility study which will investigate potential solutions, with possible trials after the study has concluded.

At the outset of the project, the Agency wants to engage with government representatives, road user groups, vehicle manufacturing associations, local authorities, EV supply chain interests, energy suppliers, and other stakeholders to ensure that all relevant views are taken into account during the research. The Agency wants to ensure full transparency and a multi-party dialogue between stakeholders.

The workshop marks the start of engagement for the feasibility study. The objective of the workshop is to provide an overview of the project (to be presented by research leaders TRL) and to gather key questions and issues which stakeholders believe need to be addressed as part of the investigation.

The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership, the SMMT and Cenex are supporting the Highway Agency in this project by facilitating engagement with a wide range of stakeholders.
