If automakers can seamlessly integrate electric car charging infrastructure into our everyday life, the transition to EVs will be that much easier. Reuters reports that BMW has installed two “Light and Charge” plug-in EV charging stations that double as streetlights outside of its Munich headquarters.

The prototype charging stations combine LED streetlights with BMW’s ChargeNow recharging stations, with the first two systems installed outside of BMW’s Munich headquarters. Paying for the charge will be as simple as using a mobile phone app, and the chargers won’t take up any more space than your average urban streetlamp. Don’t want to plug-in in public? BMW has a home-charging option as well an fancier charger made mostly from bamboo.

Integrating EV charging stations into the surrounding infrastructure is a huge benefit not even hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can claim; there are already wireless charging concepts that look more like manhole covers than charging pads. BMW has teamed up with Mercedes on wireless inductive charging, but for now blending charging stations into the local aesthetic is another talking point in favor of electric cars.
