Mazda CX-3 Crossover Teased Ahead Of LA Debut

Crossovers accounted for 25% of all new car sales in the U.S. last year. The Mazda CX-3 will only add to the volume of crossover sales as the Japanese automaker seeks to bring a new compact crossover to the table, revealing a little of its look in a teaser shot.

The term “crossover” is a broad definition that includes a huge variety of vehicles, from the compact Mitsubishi Outlander Sport to the full-size Ford Flex. It’s primarily for this reason that the segment is such a huge slice of the sales chart, though the compact crossover market where the Mazda CX-3 will compete has become especially heated. The Fiat 500X and Jeep Renegade are just a couple of the many new compact crossovers rolling out from domestic and foreign car manufacturers alike.

The CX-3 is almost certainly built around the bones of the all-new Mazda2 subcompact, and will likely share the same drivetrain options as well. This is likely to include a 1.5 liter gas engine, and a turbodiesel version too for the true penny pinchers. There might even be an electric or plug-in hybrid version way down the line, and other fuel-saving technologies like the i-ELOOP system from the Mazda6 could find their way into the CX-3 as well.

Other than that though we’ve got little and less to go on in regards to the Mazda CX-3, at least until the covers come off at the L.A. Auto Show in mid-November.
