LanzaTech, GranBio, Algenol and Novozymes take top slots in The 50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy for 2014-15

LanzaTech took the #1 spot in the 2014-15“50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy” rankings, published today in The Digest, the world’s most widely-read bioeconomy daily. It was first year at the top for LanzaTech, which came in 2nd in last years’ poll.

GranBio (#2), Algenol (#3), Novozymes (#4), Solazyme (#5), DuPont (#6), POET-DSM (#7), Beta Renewables (#8), DSM (#9) and Abengoa Bioenergy (#10) rounded out the top 10.

Ranked #11 through #20 are Amyris (#11), POET (#12), Renewable Energy Group (#13), Enerkem (#14), BASF (#15), Sapphire Energy (#16), CoolPlanet Energy Systems (#17), BP Biofuels (#18), Virent (#19), and Gevo (#20)

The annual rankings, which recognize innovation and achievement in fuels and intergrated biorefinery development, are based 50 percent on votes from an invited panel of distinguished international selectors, and 50 percent on votes from subscribers of The Digest. Overall, more than 100,000 individual company ratings were received from panelists and voters.

“This year, the voters went global in picking companies founded in New Zealand, Brazil, the US, Denmark, the Netherlands, Iurtaly and Spain in the top 10,” said Digest editor and publisher Jim Lane. “Companies that are building commercial-scale biorefineries were hot this year, as readers and selectors rewarded the hard yards of building success at scale.”

Among the Hot 50, 35 were US-based companies and 15 were from other countries – last year, 12 companies from outside the US made the list. 26 are active in cellulosic biofuuels development (up from 20 last year), and 19 are producing “drop-in” renewable biofuels such as biobutanol, renewable diesel, green gasoline and renewable jet fuel (up from 15).

New companies in the list this year are: POET-DSM (#7), ADM (#30), Cargill (#31), Raizen (#34), NexSteppe (#35),  Clariant (#39), Ensyn (#41), ICM (#43) and Aemetis (#49)
